How to Start Your Spiritual Art Journal

Faith-based art journaling doesn't have to be overwhelming.  Generally the hardest part is starting!  I know it can seem like it's not something for you although it intrigues you.  But you think to yourself... I'm not an artist... I don't know how to draw a straight line.  Guess what... IT DOESN'T MATTER!  WOOHOO!  All you have to have is a love of God, a journal, and something to write with.  It's that simple to start.

STEP 1: BUY A BAG DEDICATED TO FAITH ART JOURNALING

This will make your journaling portable and when you find yourself with some free time, you can just sit down somewhere and create!

STEP 2: BUY SOME BASIC SUPPLIES

This list is purely basic.  Just a start.  As you get into your journal, you will find that you want to add and expand your supplies. Trust me.... it's an amazing journey :) I started out with these supplies...

An unlined journal that supported multi media.  So something you can wet with watercolors and draw with markers and it keeps it's integrity.

Color pencils.  This was a personal choice because I found them easier to carry around.  You can use any medium that you are comfortable with, such as, watercolors, markers or pastels.

Bible as the source of my inspiration!

That's it!  You can add any supplies as you go.

STEP 3: TAKE 5 MINUTES TO THINK

Take a few moments out of your day, or if you are inspired while cooking or doing your hair, stop and write it down!  Then come back to it when you have more time to create your journal page. You can also get inspiration from one of our lessons at www.faithartjournaling.net

STEP 4: START WITH A BACKGROUND

I find that as soon as I start, pictures pop into my head.  If you are reading a passage that talks about giving of yourself to others, draw a gift and you will see that as you go, you will be inspired and you can add more and more to it.  Don't be afraid to cut a picture out of a magazine that works with your page, or using wrapping paper.  It's all up to you and there is NO WRONG WAY TO DO IT!

STEP 5: WRITE YOUR THOUGHTS

Make sure you leave a bit of space for your reflection of the scripture your pondering.  How does it make you feel... how does it reflect in your life?

STEP 6: DATE IT

You will love looking back at your journals and remember what was going on at the time and see how you have changed and grown.

It’s been a VERY tough year. 2020 has been packed with many twists and turns that have made our heads spin. But it's that time of year again. December is almost here, and with it, all the joys of Christmas. I think Christians are looking forward to this Christmas in a way that they never have before. People are craving peace, unity and most and above all LOVE!
